Rustic Modern

in home, inspiration, thoughts

Modern rustic... Rustic modern... Whatever you call it, I think it's my favorite style. Give me plenty of light from walls of windows, old wooden rafters, stone floors and soft rugs under my toes. Feather pillows, fresh flowers. Farm house in the city. Sheets drying on the clothes line and a warm dinner with friends next to an outdoor fireplace on a cool night.

These are a few of my favorite things...

Anniversary Party Ideas

in craft, fabric, inspiration, party, thoughts

1.) Heart garland or strings of hearts. Here's the inspiration behind it.

2.) Heart lollipops
Scroll down to the swing pictures here and look for the little heart sticks on the right. These look one sided but I thought smashing the lollipop stick flat and sandwiching it between two paper hearts would be better.

3.) M <3 W or W <3 M
I bought some sheets of moss to cover these. I didn't find a solid heart but found a heart box that I could use somehow. Here's my inspiration and here's a tutorial.

4.)Fabric bunting
Kind of like this but a little closer together. I was thinking of hanging these on the fence. If I have time I'd like to applique some cut out hearts on some of the little flags. The fabric below is what I was thinking of. Here's one tutorial.

5.) Heart-shaped wire baskets and random-shaped vases/jars for flowers

Living Room Quandary

in home, inspiration, thoughts

We have an odd shaped living room. Five-sided like the profile of a diamond and I believe it's taller than it is wide (I guess I could measure). An angled ceiling between 18' and 20' at the highest side. Massive fire place columns and a mantle that I can't see the top of. A pulpit...yes, a pulpit. It's sunk about 4" from the dining room and entry floor and the builder left left a 2" deep concrete edge around the entire room so we can't lean any bookshelves against the wall. What to do with the tall empty walls...hmmmm...

Suspended library: Yes! This is an absolutely brilliant idea. Add some Billy or Expedit and our cd/dvd/cassette/vinyl collection can move from the guest room to the living room. Or even better, build a mezzanine to extend the pulpit and include the media library!

I want to rip the carpet out to stain and polish the concrete slab, knock down the 12' tall brick fireplace columns, replace the redish-brown tile with new glass tiles, and add a smaller mantle.

Check these tiles out:

Stained and polished concrete, the Ian sectional in charcoal from Room and Board, maybe with Flor carpet tiles, and our espresso and black glass TV stand.

One Friday in August

in drupal, randomness, thoughts

Updated Drupal to 6.19 on K|F and noticed I forgot a couple modules after my migration from 5 to 6. Captcha for one. How did I forget that!? The upgrade process kinda sucks...or maybe I need a better preparation process. Yes.

Assholes sure are assholes...and they're so much more shitty when you have to work with them. I really wish they would go far far away because they bring out my angry, snarky side way too often...like week-daily. But it's the weekend, no more energy spent on jerks for the next couple of days.

I'm anxiously waiting for my Portal buttons to arrive. My notcot lady will soon meet a bit of nerdiness. Glados, you earned a small place on a corner of my STM. I need to finish Portal. Finding time to play games seems close to impossible.

Ok, that's not fair. Let's try this again. I have way too many hobbies for the amount of free time I have and gaming doesn't rank very high compared to some others. I'm looking for a quilter to finish assembling my Heather Bailey quilt (and then I have a new one to start). I have the outdoor couch cushions to either recover or do some serious scrubbing (and then oil the eucalyptus). My drink-and-draw book is getting a little dusty and I have a couple canvases that haven't even been gesso'd. Sons of Anarchy to watch (YAY!). Wedding decorations tomorrow. Assembly on Friday and Saturday. I'm really diggin the projects that my ladies and I get together to work on.

Colorless and Colorful Inspiration

in art, color, craft, fabric, likes, thoughts

I love this room. I love Design Sponge. I'm really liking different shades and hues of grays on the wall, especially with white trim.

Quilt #1: Heather Bailey's "Nicey Jane" using the Baker's Dozen pattern my sister and I picked up from Cabbage Rose in Fort Worth. It's nice and simple for my first quilt.

Quilt #2: Lauren and Jessi Jung's botany line for a little bit of bark, ripple, bloom, and grass. Seeds, tendrils, bramble vines, glories, and buds. My original thought was to use Amy Butler's Lotus Brick Path pattern, but after going through the patterns on Lauren and Jessi's blog, I may change my mind. :) I like the brick path for the simplicity to show off the little details and patterns of the fabric. Who knows, by the time I finish my Nicey Jane Baker's Dozen, I may find a new pattern.
Quilt Attempt #1 Quilt #2

Quilt #3?: Rosemarie Lavin's Spa collection in browns and greens or browns and blues? I'm looking for something cool and calm in colors both Will and I dig.
Quilt #3?

I <3 The Outdoors

in garden, thoughts, wants

I'm in love with outdoor kitchens. And this month's edition of Garden Design is full of outdoor entertaining info. I wish it were a 300 page edition...I'd read it all. I'd love to have a full outdoor kitchen, dining room table, and a big outdoor fireplace to relax around. Ahhhhhhhh... Check out Lynx Professional Grills and Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet.

I wish I had an entire week of todays. It was gorgeous. My outdoor adventure began with a little veggie garden brainstorming. Then I rearranged the deck furniture, moved the grill off the side patio to a corner of the deck, bagged some leaves, mowed and mulched both parts of the back yard, cleaned out my iris' and green onions, cut back what-I-think-is-a-blackberry plant, filled the outside ring of the firepit with a mix of lava rock and pea gravel, and started to replace the two front yard landscape light transformers with one 300w transformer. I need to run two new uplights and the last 18 tiered lights. I think I finally decided where to build my veggie garden. Right off the side patio is a small section of yard that gets a good amount of morning and afternoon sun. I'm thinking a 6' x 4' raised bed built out of bricks that match the existing landscape bricks. Jalapenos, cayennes, and habaneros -- yes. Onions, garlic, herbs -- yes. I'd really like to grow some tomatoes, but I've had absolutely no luck with them. Hopefully our neighbor will leave plenty of fresh tomatoes on our doorstep this year. Yums! I just hope we have more beautiful weather over the next couple of weekends to build my garden. I've been in serious slacker mode with growing edibles for the last couple of years. It's time to get back to work...or play in my case.
